Recreational Activities

The Denton A. Cooley Athletic Center is located on the medical campus adjacent to Reed Hall. It provides facilities for basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer and racquetball. In addition, it has an indoor track, weight rooms, cardiovascular studios and locker rooms. Programs include: aerobics, yoga, Pilates, Spinning, intramural sports, tournaments, and leagues. Outdoor tennis courts and outdoor swimming facilities are also available.

Membership at a reduced rate is available to all postdoctoral fellows and house staff. For convenience, the fees can be payroll deducted. You may obtain information on the use of these facilities by calling extension 5- 2513 or 5-2514, or visiting www.coolevcenter.com.

MUSIC!

Midday Performances -Our seasonal program noon day concerts in Hurd Hall showcases an eclectric variety of musical styles and tastes from a Renaissance lutist to a Celtic harpist, from a jazz trio to a Ragtime ensemble, from a choral chorale to a sultry soprano, the OCA Midday Performances feature top notch talent from Baltimore, Peabody, and beyond. And you are always welcome to bring your lunch!

Concerts in Turner -Featuring members of the JHMI Chamber Music and Choral Societies, the OCA's Concerts in Turner offer unique programming that complements the regional musical offering. Performances are headlined by featured soloists and principals from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. Anyone interested in joining the JHMI Choral Society is invited to contact the JHMI Musical Director, Dr. Patricia Sparti at spartip@georgetown.edu.

TALKS!

Conversation Series -An inforn1al series fostering dialogue between our community with leaders and figures from diverse fields. Recent speakers have included sports agent, negotiator, and author (The Power of NICE) Ron Shapiro, world explorer John Goddard, and Hopkins chronicler, editor Mame Warren.

Humanities Series -Public programs designed to enable a coherent exploration of major issues and fields of humanistic study within a medical context. Topics addressing the inter-relationship of medicine and the humanities have included perennial ways of comprehending and coping with human experience. The pioneer project has become a model for other medical institutions.

Poetry Readings & Lectures -The OCA augments our Talks! Presenting a series of endowed poetry readings and lectures throughout the year.

TRANSPORTATION

Limited transportation services are provided by the Institution for staff and patients. A complete listing of routes and schedules is available on the web at: www. hopkinsmedicine .org / securi tv. BUS SERVICE

The University provides a shuttle between the Medical Institutions and the Homewood Campus, seven days a week. Departures from the Medical Institutions leave from Monument Street across from the Welch Medical Library. This shuttle makes stops at the Peabody Conservatory of Music, Penn Station (to connect with AMTRAK and MARC Trains), and 27th Street (for the University Press, and CTY).
Between 6:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. almost 1,000 people are transported from the Homewood Campus to the Medical Institutions. Each bus has a 40 or 48 passenger capacity, with no standees allowed. Buses may depart prior to scheduled time when full. It is recommended that passengers arrive at Shriver Hall 10-15 minutes before scheduled departure times. Designated buses are wheel chair accessible.

The Homewood Campus stop is within walking distance of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library and a variety of support services offered at that campus. While a full schedule is maintained during the summer months, service may be canceled due to inclement weather. Current schedules may be obtained at the guard station across from the Welch Library on Monument Street, and at the Homewood Security Department Office, Room 14, Shriver Hall, 410.516.4600. http://www.jhu.edu/-security/JHMISched.htm.

CREDIT UNION

The Johns Hopkins Federal Credit Union is a full service, not-for-profit mancial institution serving the Johns Hopkins community and is open to Johns Hopkins employees, including postdoctoral fellows and house staff and their family members. Because it's not profit-oriented, the Credit Union can provide exceptional and economical services to its members. To join, a minimum $25 deposit is required in a Share Savings Account. After that, you can take advantage of any of the Credit Union's numerous other services. You can also Direct Deposit your pay to your Share Savings or Share Draft Checking account at the Credit Union, and/or Payroll Deduct a portion of your pay to your Credit Union savings or other account (e.g. Holiday Club).

The Credit Union's Share Draft Checking Account is free, and there is no minimum balance requirement, no charge per check, and no monthly service charge. Free Credit Union specified checks are also available with Direct Deposit. The Credit Union also has VISA Check cards and ATM cards -which are also free with Direct Deposit -offering access through the Honor/Star and Cirrus networks. Credit Union A TMs are located in the Hospital Lobby, Outpatient Center, Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Building in East Baltimore; and in Gilman Hall, Levering Hall, and the Wyman Park Medical Services Building on the Homewood campus. The Credit Union also has an A TM on the Bayview, Peabody, Greenspring Station, Johns Hopkins at Eastern and Montgomery County campuses. Deposits can be made at all these locations, except Levering Hall, Peabody and Montgomery County. Credit Union members can also make withdrawals at any M&T Bank ATM without paying the surcharge normally charged by M&T. For details on the A TM or VISA Check card, please contact the Credit Union.

Credit Union members have free Internet and telephone access to their accounts 24 hours a day to check balances, conduct transfers or withdrawals, view their online statements, or reorder checks. Members can also apply for Bill Payment, a secure online service available through the Internet Branch. Bill Payment allows members to electronically pay an unlimited number of bills via their PC to any company, organization, or individual within the United States. Bill Pa}1llent is free for the first three months, then costs only $4.95 a month after that with Direct Deposit and only $5.95 a month without Direct Deposit.

Because it is a not-for-profit organization, the Credit Union generally charges lower rates for loans than most other area financial institutions. Loans are available for new and used cars, bill consolidation, computers, home purchases, and other needs. Area auto dealers and a number of other local merchants offer discounts to Credit Union members. Members who Direct Deposit into the Credit Union receive an additional ~% discount on their car or personal loans. Members are eligible to apply for loans immediately upon membership and can apply online via the Internet Branch for faster, easier processing.

The Credit Union's East Baltimore branch is located at 2027 E. Monument Street and is open 8:30-3, Monday through Thursday, and 8:30-4 on Fridays. You can also contact them at telephone extension is 5-4500 or visit the Internet Branch address is www.ihfcu.org.

LOAN FUNDS

Small loan funds are available for emergency use by house staff and fellows. These funds are extremely limited in size and are administered through the Office of Postdoctoral Programs, Room 119, School of Medicine Administration Building.

TAXES

The IRS has taken the position that payment received by the house staff from the University constitutes compensation for services rendered and is therefore taxable income.

The University does not withhold taxes on scholarship/fellowship payments. You are responsible for making Federal and Maryland estimated tax payments. Scholarship or fellowship grant payments made to US citizens and resident aliens are not reported on form W -2 or form I 099. Therefore, the Tax Office cannot provide you with a form for any scholarship or fellowship grant payments received during the tax year. Save your last paycheck stub for tax reporting purposes. These payments are generally taxable income which should be reported.

The University Tax Office has a web site, which presents basic infonnation about the tax status of various kinds ofUniversity payments to students. House staff and postdoctoral fellows should use this as a reference source. The web site is: www.controller.jhu.edu.

PAYROLL

Each department has its own budget office. You will be infOnIled by your department where you should report to complete payroll r~gistration and a W-4 withholding statement Be sure you bring your social security number with you as well as documentation to prove employment eligibility.

Your check will be issued by The Johns Hopkins University, on a semi-monthly basis. Checks are distributed on the 15th and last day of the month. The check you receive will represent your total cash remuneration from the University. Payroll deduction$ will have been made for federal and local income tax, social security, and insurance premiums for which you are responsible.

Upon request, the University will deposit your stipend directly in the bank of your choice. Ask the departmental budget office for the appropriate fonn to accomplish this.

If you do not have a social security number, information may be obtained regarding application in the Office of International Services, Reed Hall, 1 st floor.

SECURITY

The Security Communications Center is located in Harvey 104, extension 5-5585. Because the extensive layout of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions comprises 57 buildings, the security department is staffed by uniformed (unarmed) officers providing interior, exterior and mobile patrols operating on a 24-hour basis to assist and respond to emergency or security-related incidents. Additionally, off-duty Baltimore Police officers are employed by JHlvfi to patrol the exterior perimeter of the 44-acre campus located within the eastern sector of Baltimore City.

Among the services provided by Security are a lost and found property section, located at Harvey 109, and a walking escort service which operates within the campus perimeter. Escort service can be requested at any security post or entrance, or by calling extension 5-5585.

You are reminded to visibly display your identification badge at all times within the Institutions. To remove any property, personal or JHMI, from the facilities you must obtain a property pass, signed by your department head.

The Security Department is here to serve and protect you. Remember, you are in an urban area. Know where you live, work and study. Be street-smart and aware of what is going on around you. Secure your valuables. Park on campus and lock your car. ."

To ensure your security and safety, you are asked to immediately report any crime, no matter how minor, and to report any suspicious activity, no matter how insignificant it may seem at the time, to the Security Communications Center,. Harvey 104, extension 5-5585.

PARKING

Individuals commuting by car may apply for monthly parking permits for use in the Johns Hopkins parking facilities. Application for a monthly parking permit should be made in person at the Parking Office, Harvey/Nelson Room 108 between 8:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. With questions, you may call extension 5-5333. Monthly permits provide a large reduction in cost over daily rates.

PASSWORD EXPIRATION


All physician passwords expire after 180 days. Upon expiration of the password, a warning message will be displayed on the DOME screen and you will be prompted through the password change procedure. You will need to enter a new password of at least six characters/digits to a maximum of eight characters/digits. The security system will retain a historic record of your twelve previous passwords which cannot be reused.

PASSWORDS MUST BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL.

Passwords MUST adhere to the following standards:

Consist of alphabetic, numeric
NOT be the same as the user ID or name
NOT have any conservative or repeating characters NOT be part of a standard dictionary

There MUST be a combination of alpha and numeric characters [at least one (1) numeric or alpha]. There is no positional requirement. A few examples:

Passwords should not be easily guessed, such as: social security number, initials, nicknames, children’s names, birth dates, phone number, or car license plate.

A password that uses both alphabetic and numeric characters is strongly suggested. Note: this is required.

The password acts as an electronic signature and is comparable to the authorized user’s written legal signature. Passwords must never be shared or revealed to anyone else. Revealing a password exposes the authorized user to responsibility for actions that another party takes with the password.

OFFICE OF POSTDOCTORAL PROGRAMS

The Office of Postdoctoral Programs, within the Dean's Office of the School of Medicine,is directed by an associate dean. The office deals with all house staff of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and all research and clinical postdoctoral fellows in the School of Medicine. In conjunction with the Vice President for Medical Affairs of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, the office recommends and implements policies covering house staff, and non-house staff postdoctoral fellows. Policies not specifically addressed in this handbook are available in the Postdoctoral Office. These include, but are not limited to, policies relating to stipend levels; sick leave; maternity and parental leave; probation, suspension and termination; leave of absence; and grievance procedures.

LIBRARIES

The William H. Welch Medical Library provides a variety of resources supporting the teaching, patient care, and research goals of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institution and the University. JHU faculty, staff and students can take advantage of a multitude of library services; including a wide range of databases and journals, liaison and reference services, interlibrary loan requests, document delivery, and computer and biomedical communication classes. Credit courses are offered through the Division of Biomedical Information Sciences, providing practical, hands-on instruction in the key areas of scientific writing, computers, databases, and the Internet. Many services and resources are available 24 hours a day, both on and off-campus, from the library's web site, Welch Web, www. welch. jhu.edu. Proxy server information and setup instructions can be found at http://proxy.hcf.jhu.edu.

DINING FACILITIES

The Main Dining: Room, with a large menu selection, is located on the first floor of the Children's Center. Service hours are: 6:15 a.m. -7:00 p.m., daily. Closed 10:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m.

The Espress Oasis, located in the northeast comer of the Main Cafeteria, features gourmet coffees (four varieties each day), specialty non-coffee beverages, fresh made pastries, soups and sandwiches. Hours of operation are 5 30 a.m. -10:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; 5:30 a.m. -8:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

Subway is located inside the Main Dining Room on the first floor of the Children's Center. Service hours are: 10:00 a.m. -12:00 a.m., daily.

The Doctors' Dining Room is open for luncheon service from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., Monday -Friday.

House Staff on duty in the General Operating Rooms and GYN Operating Rooms who are unable to leave for lunch may eat in facilities provided for staff in those areas.

Weinberg Building, located at Broadway and Orleans, next to the Wilmer Institute, houses:

The Staff Cafeteria. for House Staff on Duty who are unable to leave for lunch, is located on the Second floor adjacent to the staff locker rooms. Salad bar, express meals, pizza, coffee, soda, yogurt are available. Hours are 8:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m., Monday -Friday.

The Juice and Java is located in the main lobby. Gourmet coffees and teas, muffins, croissants, desserts, smoothies, soft yogurt, and a light lunch menu are available. Hours of operation are 6:30 a.m. -3:30 p.m., Monday -Friday.

The Tower Terrace, located in the Nelson Building between the Admitting Office and the Meyerhoff Courtyard, is a full service restaurant featuring a variety of gourmet foods, vegetarian items, and a sushi bar. Hours of operation are 11:00 a.m. -2:45 p.m., Monday- Friday.

Harborside Chicken & Seafood. located on the first floor of the Blalock Building. This eatery's name says it all- offering a variety of seafood items from Maryland backfin crabcakes to shrimp, fish sandwiches and clams as well as chicken breast sandwiches and chicken strips. Combo platters, kid's meals, jumbo-combo platters, and homemade Maryland crab soup and New England clam chowder round out the menu. Hours of operation are 11 :00 a.m. -9:00 p.m., Monday -Friday; 11 :00 a.m. -8:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

The Grille 601. located on the Plaza Level of the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center (iliaC), Broadway Wing, is a restaurant with cafeteria-style service that offers an innovative menu featuring healthy and fresh foods. Hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. -2:30 p.m., Monday -Friday.

The Coffee Bar .located on the first floor in the Outpatient Center, offers a variety of gourmet coffees and teas, muffins, croissants, desserts, and a light lunch menu. The Coffee Bar is open from 7:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m., Monday -Friday. All proceeds go to the Women's Board, which in turn give all to patient care.

The Hampton House Café
, located on the first floor of the Hampton House, 624 North Broadway, is open from 7:00 a.m. -2:30 p.m., Monday -Friday. .1

The Bloomberg School of Public Health has dining facilities on the ninth floor. Hours are 7:00 a.m. -2:30 p.m., Monday -Friday.

The Cafe at the Greenhouse. Located on the first floor in the Pre-clinical Teaching Building (pm). Hours of operation are:

Breakfast: Monday -Friday 7:00 a.m. -10:45 a.m.
Lunch: Monday –Friday 11:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m.
Coffee Bar: Monday –Friday 7:00a.m. -3:30p.m.

Food vending machines are available 24 hours a day in the dining area on the first floor of the pm.
