Learning Contract

Before completing the Learning Contract you may find it useful to consider the following:

As you work out your learning objectives, aim to provide yourselves levels of knowledge or skill. I find these fall into a continuum: knows-->uses-->specifies-->executes-->innovates.

Statistical analysis
--Can read and interpret output
--Can perform
--Can specify complex analyses
--Can implement complex analyses

Data standards in integrating data for public health surveillance
--Can interpret a formal description of a data standard
--Can use data standards in design or analysis
--Can specify a data standard
--Can implement a data standard in a functioning information system

National policies on health information technologies
--No experience
--Can interpret policy documents
--Can use policy documents  in practice/research
--Can specify what the policy ought to be
--Has participated in the debate at a local or national level

For the level you want to achieve, think of what you would have to demonstrate to show achievement. For instance:

Data standards in integrating data for public health surveillance
--Can interpret a formal description of a data standard
--Write an essay describing the pros and cons of the data standard for a particular purpose
--Can use data standards in design or analysis
--Write an RFP or design document that uses the data standard appropriately
--Can specify a data standard
--Write a data standard description document (or part of it)
--Can implement a data standard in a functioning information system
--Code a multimodule system that works as intended and that incorporates the data standard as mission critical to the system

Finally, think what course or experience (practicum, research project) would (force) you to do that demonstration (at the level you care about).

Learning Contract Form

The purposes of the learning contract are
(1) to help the Fellow and the mentor in constructing a trainee-specific program of study and learning
(2) to help the Fellow to focus on their true areas of interest or areas for improvement and
(3) to help the Director keep the Fellow on track.
As the Fellow comes up with new ideas in the course of their stay, the Contract is helpful in assessing whether the new possibilities cohere with the Fellow's long-term interests, as represented in the Contract.

The following, as a separate document, is due Aug 30, after consulting with Harold and your Track Leader. Please print and fill out. Thank you!

By the end of the two years, I shall have demonstrated knowledge in the following areas:

(1.)

(2.)

By the end of the two years, I shall have demonstrated skill in the following areas:

(1.)

(2.)

By the end of the two years, I shall have a research manuscript submitted for publication.
