Dr. Christopher Chute Honored with Two Major Recognitions: NAM Election and AMIA Award

Dr. Chris Chute recently received two exciting distinctions. First, he is among the 2024 membership class for the National Academy of Medicine. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, recognizing individuals for their exceptional professional accomplishments and dedication to service. New members are elected by current members through a rigorous process. Only two Johns Hopkins physicians were selected for this year’s class.

Dr. Chute was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) for his sustained leadership and innovation in representing clinical and phenotypic data in computable formats, which have greatly impacted the design and content of electronic health records and their reuse as real-world data in translational research, drawing on foundational work in biomedical ontology, clinical classification, and FAIR interoperability standards.

Dr. Paul Nagy, Director of BIDS training programs, is excited about this prestigious accomplishment and says, “Chris is an exceptional leader in the field of Informatics and at Johns Hopkins. The fact that he received this recognition underscores his achievements, accomplishments, and commitment to human health.”

Dr. Chute is also the 2024 recipient of one of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Signature Awards. The William W. Stead Award for Thought Leadership in Informatics acknowledges individuals who have influenced thinking about informatics, especially improving health care in visionary and transformative ways.

“Chris’ recognition as an NAM fellow and an AMIA Signature Award recipient is not only incredible for Chris as an individual, but also brings additional prestige to our BIDS training programs. It is wonderful to see an informaticist being recognized by the Academy.  We applaud his continued hard work and dedication to improving health through translating basic science information to clinical practice,” says Dr. Hadi Kharrazi, professor and director of the Health Sciences Informatics PhD program.

The BIDS team is proud to see Dr. Chute’s outstanding work recognized.
